Acid Vomit: The Art of Sean Äaberg

I've known Katie and Sean Äaberg since the olden days (and by olden days, I mean Livejournal). Sean is the same age as me and has been making zines since the late 80s! How cool is he? I didn't even see a zine until college. I remember the first time I saw a zine in the 90s, and it really opened up a new world of ideas. Handmade photocopied collage-style magazines in a weird style with punk/alt ethos conveniently found at indie record shops and booksellers? Yes, please. (Fun fact: My first zine subscription was the psychobilly zine Deathrow Database.)
So anyway, Katie and Sean run the really cool GOBLINKO MEGAMALL (the patches, guys! the patches!) and used to do a really cool zine called PORK (grab some back issues, they are so fun and interesting). One of their sons made a comic book when he was 7 that is hilarious and amazing (the puzzle page, guys!).

Sean does all kinds of incredible lowbrow/punk-style art and I'm a big fan (so are my kids). Last autumn, he suffered a severe cerebellar stroke and is in the middle of a remarkable recovery. In the meantime, he and Katie are making a collected volume of Sean's old artwork. Me: Okay, so one of my favourite stories about you is that Katie wrote you a fan letter in high school and said she wanted to have your babies. I know you guys went to the same college, how did you meet?
Sean: Me & Katie met in art school - she was school council & I was smoking in the walkways hanging out always. Then we worked on the school zine together.
Me: What made you guys decide to homeschool?
Sean: I think neither of us had a good enough of a school experience that we didn’t want to repeat it on our kids.

Me: My 6 year old asks, "how did you get your stroke?"
Sean: We still don’t know why I had a stroke - probably won’t know - but I’ll just continue healthy living & probably make it healthier as I age.
Sean: I’ve been exercising, piddling about on my computer, resting & watching movies.
Me: My 11 year old asks, "What inspired you to create the PORK magazine and GOBLINKO MEGAMALL as a whole?"
Sean: Inspiration for PORK & the GOBLINKO MEGAMALL was the backs of old comics & magazines.
Me: I've always been a big fan of your articles, can you talk a little about your philosophy and ethos?
Sean: My philosophy has turned into a live & let live & get out of my way mentality - where instead of being mad at humanity’s stupidity - I feel bad for them. Which is easier than being mad, & also more emotionally mature I reckon. Mostly I just feel sorry for people now.

All drawings in this post are by Sean Äaberg. These were the trickiest image descriptions I've ever had to write! XD
